I Love Bugs!

I Love Bugs! By Emma Dodd
Grades PreK-1

This big, bright, bold book uses rhyming, alliteration and onomatopoeia to share one little boy's delight in the bugs all around him.

Lesson seed: Read the book to your class and then make the cute (not scary!) spiders that I found below at doodlebugsteaching.blogspot.com first grade blog.

  1. Hi, can i ask you something? I’m looking for children books with “scary” animal illustrations like the big bad wolf (or a fox) eating pigs (or seven kids or Red Riding hood or birds in Chicken Little) or being pictured with a fat stomach. Could be any other animal as well. Have you seen any book of this sort? Any sort of help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    Great blog, by the way!

    1. Thanks! I'm glad you enjoy it. I'm not sure what age level you have in mind for the "scary" animal books, but I have found that older books tend to be a little creepier with their illustrations. Also fairy tales tend to be darker and scarier so those usually make good picks too. Here are some suggestions that might suit your needs:
The Three Little Gators by Helen Ketteman (not actually eating the animals but great scary illustrations for little kids)
Peter and the Wolf version retold by Ann King Herring and illustrated by Kozo Shimizu (an old version but hopefully you can get your hands on a copy)
The Twelve Wild Geese (adapted and illustrated by Matt Faulkner)
Traveling to Tondo: A Tale of Nkundo of Zaire (retold by Verna Aardema)
